  	PENNINGTON GAP, VA - Pearl Ruth Hammonds Holmes, age 88, of Pennington Gap, VA, passed away on January 16, 2018, at the Lee Health and Rehab Center in Pennington Gap, VA. Pearl was a Pennington High School graduate and loved playing on the basketball team. She had worked as a nurses aide in her earlier years of life and later provided in home care for several people. Pearl was of the Baptist faith and a member of the Valley View Church in Dry Branch. Pearl was preceded in death by her parents James P. and Della Hammonds; three brothers Eugene Woodard, Clarence Hammonds, Hubert Hammonds; two sisters Ruby Baird, Annie Lawson; her son Evert Lipps; and her husband Laney Holmes. Pearl is survived by three sons Dennis and wife Tammy Lipps, Donald and wife Pat Lipps, Tim and wife Tammy Lipps; her daughter Mildred and husband Jerry Burgin; 10 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and a host of many nieces, nephews and friends. Visitation for Pearl Ruth Hammonds Holmes will be Thursday, January 18, 2018, from 6-8 p.m. in the Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel in Pennington Gap, VA. Funeral Services will follow on January 18, 2018, at 8 p.m. with Pastor Wally Berry officiating. Graveside services will be Friday, January 19, 2018, at 11 a.m. in the Powell Valley Cemetery in Dryden, VA.
