  Bertha Hale was the first child born to George Hale and Mary E. Lovell. Bertha always wore her hair really long and she chewed tobacco. She began chewing at the age of 12. Bertha married Oscar Fowler in Newton Co., Ark. Their first house was on the farm of Bertha's parents. They later moved to Oklahoma, but Bertha became homesick for her parents and they moved back to Arkansas. They moved to Boxley where they built their own house. They later lived in Jasper and also in Gentry. The children attended the Cave Mountain School at one time for abt a year. Bertha and Oscar also lived in Stillwater, Payne Co, Oklahoma at one time. Some of the other Hale children also lived there.
