| 54 | "Newt W. Ashurst, well known and respected Somerset citizen, died late Thursday afternoon at his home on East Mt. Vernon Street. He had been in declining health for four years but death was due to bronchial pneumonia. Mr. Ashurst, the son of Craig and Mary Ridings Ashurst, was born two miles east of Somerset April 17, 1870. He was educated in the county schools and for many years engaged in farming. He had been a loyal member of the Methodist Church for 40 years, and led an exemplary life. Mr. Ashurst and Miss Lucy Jones were married in May 1898. To this union was born one daughter, Miss Coloda Ashurst. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen, and was interested in every movement contributing to the development of the community and the welfare of her citizens. Mr. Ashurst was a devoted husband and father. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at his residence, Dr. Floyd D. Rose officiating. Burial was in the City Cemetery. | 55 | “R.E.” was the son of the late Ewing and Margaret Shackleford. Robert fulfilled every obligation that he ever undertook. His word was his bond and you could count on it. Robert was generous, caring, witty, hard-working and strong. He was a loyal provider to his family and a teacher to his children and grandchildren. Robert was always willing to help anyone in need and went out of his way to show kindness. He was always there for his family to offer advice, love, encouragement or a helping hand. He delighted in spending time with his grandchildren and found much joy in their presence. Shackleford, Donnie Shackleford, Melvin Shackleford; and daughter-in-law, Tanya Lawson. Robert is survived by his children: David Shackleford, Jerry Shackleford, Pam Shackleford-Sulfridge and husband Steve, all of Middlesboro, KY; grandchildren: Amanda Shackleford, Brionna Wilson, and Aaron Shackleford; great-grandchildren: Emma Jones and Haylee Jones; daughter-in-law, Candy Walton; special friend to Robert and his wife, Cheryl Howard; in-laws who treated him as a brother; many nieces, nephews and other beloved family members are left to mourn his passing. Born June 12, 1860, in Tennessee, he had lived in Texas 63 years. He was retired farmer, and lived in this area most of his life. He and Miss Sara Kearley, who died in 1926, were married in Virginia. He was a Mason and a member of the Baptist church. Survivors are three sons Jim Coffman of Garland, Curt Coffman of Grand Pass, Oregon, and Elza Coffman of Grand Pass Oregon.; three daughters, Mrs. Will Flake of Caddo, Okla., and Mrs. Myrtle Scroggins of Vernon, and Mrs. Oca Burns of Denton, Route 2; and one sister, Mrs. Katherine Kearley of Denison. | 78 | According to Perdita Williams book: George Washington Musser once lived in Kentucky. Legend says that somewhere on the trip to Virginia, he swam a river with his wife on his back. This happened before Eugene was born. Became a miller by trade and at one time operated the old Thompson Atkins mill near Atkins, VA Enlisted in the Confederate States Army on September 4, 1861 at Marion, Virginia in Companny F, 23rd Batalion, Virginia Infantry under Captain W. H. McDonald. He enlisted to serve one year and was sent to Camp Jackson near Wytheville for training. He served immediately under Colonel Derrick and Captain J. C. Killinger. (Carl Wilson Musser, Sr.] According to Virginia pension records and including F. S. Snavely's sworn affidavit in support of George Musser's claim to a pension as a Confederate veteran, George Musser, Sr., was wounded at the Battle of New Market, VA on May 15, 1864 and taken to the hospital at Staunton. [Carl Wilson Musser, Sr.] According to George Musser's own statment, he was then sent to the Confederate Hospital at Emory and Henry College. [Carl Wilson Musser, Sr.] Deserted the confederate army after this convalesence and moved to Kentucky to avoid being punished by the "Confederate Police." Probably in January, 1865 he was tracked down in Kentucky by the Confederate Police. He was able to escape being caught by going onto the roof of the house he and his wife were staying in. By the next morning they couple were across the Ohio River in the Union state of Ohio. She retired as an administrative assistant from Zimmer Biomet and afterwards became the founder and owner of the Thorn Tree Hill Herb Farm, having earned her Master Gardener Certificate from Purdue University. She was born in Eubank, KY on January 15, 1952, daughter of the late Vurnes and Betty Louise Wesley Haste. She was a cook for Humana Hospital of Lexington and a member of Eubank Baptist Church. She is survived by a daughter, Michelle Ridings of Somerset, a son, Mark E. Ridings of Louisville, five brothers, Dee Haste of Bardstown, KY, James Haste and Hershell Haste, both of Science Hill, Fred Haste of Bethelridge, Don Haste of Bronston, four sisters, Geraldine Hines of the Pulaski Community, Diana Haste and Barbara Haste, both of Waynesburg, Nadeen Worley of Bronston, two grandchildren, Bryanna Sue Ridings and James Edward Ridings, several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Ridings, on October 26, 2005, whom she married on November 20, 1970, three brothers, Lonnie, Archie and Roscoe Haste, two sisters, Dorothy Anderson and Mae Wesley. | 91 | Alfred 'Al' Capps, 79, of Suffield, passed away at his home on Saturday, September 29, 1990, following a long illness. Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, Mr. Capps had lived in the Suffield area since 1923. He retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in 1973 after 33 years of service. A member of First Freedom Baptist Church, Mr. Capps served during World War II with the U.S. Army. He was a member of Loyalty Lodge 645 F&AM, and a 32nd Degree Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Akron. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Kathryn E. in 1975. He is survived by his wife, Alberta D.; three daughters; two sons-in-law; three sons and their wives; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Lawrence Capps of California; plus many nieces; nephews; and friends. | 95 | Allie Byrd Newman October 18, 1924 - January 1, 2014 Allie Byrd Newman, 86, of Jonesville, VA, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at Holston Valley Medical Center. A native of Lee County, she was born October 18, 1927 to the late Nace and Estella Johnson Edwards. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Walter, Tom, Buford and N.R. Edwards, and four sisters, Edna Dales, Maggie Delph, Maude Ethel Edwards and Mary Barnes. Allie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was also a dedicated caregiver to many and will be sorely missed. She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Cam Newman Jr.; daughters, Peggy Wilder and husband Wade, of Jonesville, and Emma Hensley and husband Roger, also of Jonesville; son, Richard Newman and wife Martha, of Kingsport, TN; sister, Gladys “Nell” Gibson, of Daytona Beach, FL; brother, Eugene “Gene” Edwards, of Blackstock, SC; grandchildren, Tammy Wright and husband John, Anthony Wilder and wife Vickie, Richard Scott Newman and wife Lisa, Barry Wilder and Eric Hensley; great-grandchildren, Justin, Aaron, Jordan, Austin, Peyton, Colton and Carrie; and several nieces and nephews. | 99 | Alva Mae Crawford, 86, of Vanceburg, Ky., died Saturday, July 22, 2000, at a Maysville Ky., hospital. She was born Jan. 11, 1914, in Petersville, Ky., a daughter of the late Allen Mont Kegley and Evline Trusdell Kegley. She was a member of the Oak Ridge Baptist Church and Lewis County (Ky.) Senior Citizens. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Edward Pollitt, Feb 3, 1971, and James Theodore "Ted" Crawford, Jan. 16, 1978. Surviving are one sister, Gladys Baker of Vanceburg; and several nephews and nieces. She also was preceded in death by one sister, Grace Johnson; one half sister, Clara Olive Conley; and two half brothers, Robert and Elmo Kegley. | 100 | Alva Shaw, 92, former resident of Maysville passed away Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at Ohio Valley Manor in Ripley, OH. where he had been a resident for sometime. Mr. Shaw was born in Lewis County on September 7, 1922 son of the late Charles and Sarah Moveta Kegley Shaw. He was a retired employee of U.S. Steel and an Army Veteran of WW II where he served in New Guinea and the Southern Philippines as a medical technician. He attended Ripley Church of the Nazarene and he loved being with his family and loved the Lord. Survivors include a son Jonathan (Carolyn) Shaw and a daughter Glenlyn (Johnnie) Conley both of Maysville. Two step children, Jim McIntire and Nora Ruble. Two grandchildren, Scott (Keri) Conley and Anne (Matt) Baker and two great grandchildren, Elizabeth and Ashley Baker. He was preceded in death by his wife Sentella Nelson Shaw and a step-son Dennis McIntire; a brother, Ora Shaw ; three sisters, Nellie Sexton, Flora Moore Dunigan and Edith Jackson; three half brothers Albert, Ernest and Elmer Hyrne. Services will be conducted at 11 A.M. Friday, December 19, 2014 at Palmer Funeral Home in May’s Lick with Rev.’s Clark Castle and Jonathan Groves officiating. Visitation will be held from 5-7 P.M.
