Born in Claiborne County, Tenn., on October 7, 1921, she was the daughter of the late John Yoakum and Roxie Hunter Yoakum Drummonds. She was united in marriage to Howard Ridings Sr. of Fonde, on August 30, 1941. She retired from the Middlesboro Independent School System in 1993 after working 27 years in food services. She had been a faithful member of Binghamtown Baptist Church since 1989. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Riding Sr.; one sister Lillie Beeler; five brothers, Cliff Yoakum, Ed Yoakum, Fred Yoakum, Walter Yoakum and Grover Yoakum. Survivors include her children: son, Howard (Jan) Ridings Jr. of Fort Wayne, Ind., and daughters, Janice Ridings and Pat Ridings of Middlesboro; granddaughters, Tammy (Darrell) Henline and Melissa Sue (Chris) Ridings-Baughman, both of Fort Wayne, Ind.; great-granddaughters, Rachel and Abby Henline of Fort Wayne, Ind.; very special family friend, Homer Standifur of Middlesboro; her church family at Binghamtown Baptist Church who she loved dearly, and who has shown her so much love and support and prayers during her illness; and Dr. Thomas Epperson, ARH Home Health, Pineville Community Hospital staff and ARH Staff who took wonderful care of her. Born Sept. 8, 1970, in Fort Wayne, she was the daughter of Howard and Jan Ridings, they survive. She dedicated her life to helping others. A nurse for over 20 years, she was compassionate, loving and touched the lives of countless people throughout her lifetime. Loved by all who knew her, she brightened every room she walked into. She was devoted to her two nieces, Rachel and Abby and her great-nephew, Brandon. The bond she shared with her nieces and nephew was one they will cherish forever. She was always there for those she loved and was a true friend to all who knew her. She treasured her dog, Junior, and was always up for a new adventure. She loved to travel and enjoyed life to the fullest. In her spare time, she enjoyed listening to Loretta Lynn's music and was a true fan of the University of Kentucky Wildcats. Her greatest joy was spending time with her nieces and nephew who called her "MeMe." Also surviving are her sister, Tammy (Darrell) Henline; nieces, Rachel (Ricky) Igney and Abby Henline; great-nephew, Brandon Igney; and aunts, Janice and Patsy Ridings, both of Middlesboro, Ky. The daughter of Henry and Bernice (Suhr) Daubresse, she was born August 24, 1928 in Macon County, Missouri. On May 5, 1950 in Kirksville, Missouri, Jean was united in marriage to Anthony “Tony” Grgurich. Jean is survived by her husband Tony of sixty-one years; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Kathy Grgurich of Novinger, MO, and Larry and Linda Grgurich of Kirksville, MO; one brother, Henry Daubresse and wife Jill of Kansas City, MO; four grandsons, Eric Grgurich and wife, Tara, Clint Grgurich and wife, Alicia all of Novinger, MO, Nick Grgurich and wife, LeAnn of Charleston, S.C. and Neal Grgurich of Camdenton, MO; one granddaughter, Natalie McBride and husband, Jason of Clever, MO; twelve great-grandchildren, Bailey, Breanna, Bryleigh, Holly, Erica, Audrey, Serenity, Noah, Victoria, Isabella, Astoria and Alexanoria; as well as a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Jean resided most of her life in Adair County and was a graduate from Kirksville High School. | 170 | Bonnie Brumit Mrs. Bonnie Brumit, 93, Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord, Saturday, January 11, 2014, in the Ivy Hall Nursing Home. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Donnelly David and Lucy Glover Williams. Mrs. Brumit formerly worked at Harrison's Shoe Store and as an LPN for Dr. E.T. Pearson and at the Carter County Memorial Hospital. She was the oldest member of West Side Christian Church where she stayed very active as long as her health permitted. She had served as a Sunday School Teacher, a strong supporter of missions, and for several years had many small group studies in her home. Mrs. Brumit enjoyed cooking for her family and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Samuel A. Brumit, June 24, 2005; by a daughter, Barbara Calloway Gentry; a sister, Helen Parris; and two brothers, Bill and Robert Williams. Survivors include a daughter, Dr. Kay Landry and her husband Ron, Austin, Texas; three sons, Sam Brumit and wife Judy, San Marcos, California, and Kenneth Calloway and wife Nancy, Elizabethton; eight grandchildren, Kenny Gentry, Kim Edwards, Karen Sandoval, Clint Mays, David Brumit, Jennifer Recknagel, Jonathan Brumit, and Jeffrey Brumit; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one niece; three nephews; and one uncle, Albert Williams. He was united in marriage to Mrs. Frances Marie Bates Sowder on March 25, 1950 and have enjoyed more than 66 happy years together as a couple. She survives. Other survivors include; a daughter, Donna Marie Eaton of Somerset, five grandchildren, Deana Marie (and Jason) Skaggs of Russell Springs, Brian (and Crystal) Sowder of Somerset, Sara (and Adam) Gress of Louisville, Wesley Elizabeth Sowder of Louisville, and James Kelly (and Ashley) Sowder of Danville; and four great grandchildren, Jaycie Skaggs, Max J. Sowder, James Ryder, and Gunner Stringer. Other than his parents, he was also preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Sowder, a sister that died in infancy, a son in law, Byron Eaton and two brothers, Kenneth and Leonard Sowder. "Jack" was a member of the Rock Lick Baptist Church and he enjoyed fishing and going to various flea markets. He was a very colorful person who loved life and his friends and family. He will be greatly missed by all of his friends and relatives who mourn his passing. | 177 | Boston - Kenneth E. Allen, 94, went to Heaven on December 7, surrounded by his loving family. Kenneth was born January 5, 1926, the second of five children to Joseph B. and Pheba O. Allen in Loyall, KY. After High School he was drafted in to the Army. He served for two years overseas during WWII. Upon his return home he opened a cabinet shop making beautiful furniture. He met the love of his life when she walked by the shop going home from school. They married on Christmas Day in 1947 and stayed married 69 years. They lived in Louisville approximately 26 years after living in North Carolina a few years. They then moved to Boston, KY for the next 37 years. Kenneth was a hard working home builder for many years. He loved fishing and had great stories about the "big ones" he caught. He also loved his family dearly and loved God and his church, College Heights UMC. Kenneth was preceded in death by his wife, Jewell; his grandson, Ethan; his step-grandson, Dustin; his parents, one sister and three brothers. He is survived by his daughter, Teresa (Tom) Storck; two sons, Steve (Ava) Allen and Perry (Tresa) Allen; eight grandchildren, Clint, Heather, Kelli, Ian, Evan, Erin, Hunter, and Raquel; and eight great grandchildren. | 180 | Brenda Lynn Ridings April 17, 1957 - May 11, 2021 Brenda Lynn (Reams) Ridings, age 64, of London, Kentucky, passed away at St. Joseph Hospital on Tuesday, May 11, 2021. She was the third child of Roscoe Burton Reams and Pearl Joyce Reams. She was the wife of James A. "Jim" Ridings. Brenda and Jim had been married to each other for almost thirty-six years. Her loving husband, Jim, survives her. Brenda is survived by her children, James Milby "Jay" (Kelly) Ridings, Jennifer Lynn Chandler, and Leigh Elizabeth Ridings (husband Blake Martin), and by two wonderful grandsons, James Maddox Ridings and Logan Ridings Martin. She is also survived by her father, Roscoe Burton Reams, and by three sisters, Vivian (Tony) Henson, Sandra (Mitch) Goodin, and Carolyn (Hoss-deceased) Ward. Brenda was preceded in death by her mother, Pearl Joyce Reams, and her brother, Randall Sherman Reams. Some of Brenda's greatest pleasures were her flowers and vegetable gardens which she planted around her house every Spring. Her family and friends loved to come to Brenda's home to admire the vast amount of colorful and beautiful flowers she raised and to commune on the back patio among the flowers for cook-outs. Brenda was a long-time member of First Christian Church in London Kentucky, and she served on the Board as a Deacon. She worked as a legal administrative assistant for her husband, Jim. She was known among her church family and work family and others for her excellent cooking, and always took pride in preparing food with meticulous detail – her world's best cheesecake being a prime example. For decades, Brenda would make a birthday dessert for each of her co-workers on their birthdays. Friends and family frequently contacted her with a specific dessert request for all kinds of occasions each year. Brenda also loved travelling – often locally. She enjoyed exploring Laurel County and other Eastern Kentucky counties. She would visit the Smoky Mountains every chance she could, and she had standby favorite locations she wanted to see on each trip. Another of her joys was frequently travelling to South Carolina to gather with her immediate family to reconnect, and when she could persuade us, to play games late into the night. Brenda's primary focus in life was her family, and she was undoubtedly the best mother and "Gam Gam" that anyone could ever hope for. She devoted herself unselfishly and with the greatest of energy to raising her three children and taking care of her husband. She eagerly looked forward to every minute she could spend with her children and with her grandsons, Maddox and Logan. He was born on March 29, 1960 in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Clyde and Betty (Byrd) Ridings. David was employed as an appliance technician and computer repairman before his retirement. David loved to ride motorcycles and enjoyed playing bingo, camping, and traveling. He was a loving son and brother and will be missed greatly. David was preceded in death by his father, Clyde. He is survived by his partner, Duayne Stanford; mother, Betty Ridings; brothers, Steve Ridings, Mike Ridings, and James Ridings; and sister, Kimberly Manning. Isaiah 40:31 Carol Jean Hines, 63, of Jonesville, VA, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, peacefully on Sunday morning, August 30, 2015 at Holston Valley Medical Center after a very long and courageous battle with ovarian cancer. Carol was saved and baptized at the age of 13. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Jonesville where she attended faithfully until her health no longer permitted her to go. Carol was a graduate of Jonesville High School class of 1969, Lincoln Memorial University class of 1973 and obtained her master’s degree in elementary education from Union College in 1982. Miss Hines retired from the Lee County Public School System after 33 years of service. She served as a first grade teacher at Jonesville and Flatwoods Elementary Schools. She loved her job dearly and always thought that all children should have a “good start” to their education. Carol was a very loving person having dedicated her whole life to teaching and serving as a caregiver to her parents who preceded her in death. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jean Mae Hines and Charles Richard Hines, her maternal and paternal grandparents, several aunts, uncles and cousins. Carol is survived by her sister and caregiver, Wanda Hines; brother, Darrell Hines (Jeanie); sister, Judy Earley (Ron), all of Jonesville; nephews, Ryan Hines of Roanoke, VA, Mason Hines (Chelsey) of Jonesville and Brennan Earley of Jackson, TN; a very special great-niece, Braelyn, and four special great-nephews, Clayton, Conner, Camron and Collin, all of Jonesville; special cousin, Fern Guenther of New Paris, OH; special friend for many years, Nina Moore of Jonesville; a loving and caring church family, other family members and friends. The family will receive friends from 12 until 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 3, at Faith Baptist Church in Jonesville. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Mickey Gibson and Bro. He was born April 10, 1922 in Jonesville to the late Cam and Emma Jesse Newman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Allie Byrd Edwards Newman; four sisters, Mollie Sewell, Nancy Byrd Warner, Ruby Ely and Bonnie Hopkins; and three brothers, Chris, Oatie and Barlow Newman Sr. Cam was a 1942 graduate of Jonesville High School and was a lifetime farmer. He was a member of Jonesville Methodist Church but attended Thompson Settlement Baptist Church. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. | 197 | Carl W. Newman, age 99 3/4, of Gate City, VA went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 27, 2019, at his residence following a period of declining health. Carl was born in Roda, Virginia on November 18, 1919, a son of the late ElKanah “EK” and Mattie Mae Kegley Newman. His family moved to Exeter, Virginia where he grew up. He graduated from Appalachia High School in 1937. He was a talented baseball player who was known as “Lefty” and received several offers to play professional ball. He then attended Berea College in Berea, Kentucky where he graduated in 1943 with honors, majoring in math and physics. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and attended Officers Training School at Columbia University, New York. He was headed to the Pacific on a destroyer named the “Colahan” where he was the Gunnery Officer. At the end of the war, he was present at the signing of the Peace Treaty. His ship escorted the Japanese ships into Tokyo Bay. After the war, he attended University of Virginia Law School in Charlottesville and graduated in 1949. Carl practiced law for over 30 years. He was a membe of Gate City United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday school for over 40 years. Carl was a former member of the VA State Bar Association and Scott County Bar Association. Carl was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 70 years, Blanche Calton Newman; loving son, Woody Calton Newman, and all of his sisters and brothers. He is survived by his loving daughter and son- in- law, Suzanne and Terry Goins; special niece, Opal Brown; several nieces and nephews; special sister-in-law, Jenny Barton. Graveside Services will be 12:00 noon Saturday, August 31, 2019, at Holston View Cemetery with Rev. Gordon McBride and Rev. Tony Nunley officiating. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Hammond Post 3/265 and Virginia National Guard. For those wishing to attend, please meet at the cemetery at 11:50 AM.
