  Son of Terry Toliver and Lucinda Evans Toliver. Husband of Polly Bailey Tolliver, nicknamed "Pop." Brother of Malkijah J. Tolliver, nicknamed "Kige." The two brothers, Lige and Kige, lived near each other lifelong. That fact has often caused people to think of them as twins,with their rhyming names and similar appearance in photographs. Their cemetery markers show two different birth dates, and U.S. Census records show different ages for Lige and Kige. Lige died 10 years before his brother. A brief death notice for Lige in the Lexington paper ran under the title, "Farmer Drops Dead." It says he was in the Post Office near home when he suddenly died (age 69). It describes Elijah as one of the early settlers of Bledsoe, KY and says he was related to most of his neighbors. Several marriage records of weddings performed in Bledsoe, Harlan County, KY list Elijah J. Tolliver as the Justice of the Peace who performed the wedding. A written family story says that in 1862 Terry and Lucinda Toliver along with Lige and their other children settled on the right fork of Rubin's Branch (near the area now known as Bledsoe). It says they came via the Cumberland Gap from Tennessee. The Tollivers previously lived in Union County, TN and Grainger County, TN.
